A soil medium and floral training was conducted on 20th May by the Solomon Islands Women in Business Association (SIWIBA) with 21 participants attending. SIWIBA was honored to have Simon Iro from the Soil Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock who has offered the members with a valuable information and a hands-on activity on the training.

Mr. Iro said that the objective was for each participant to have a general idea on some of the background information about soil; know how to identify the quality of soil; know how to improve and maintain its performance; and understand approaches on how to monitor a soil’s fertility status and find ways on how to address its issues. On that note, it targeted those with basic skills on floral as well as those who are interested in venturing into floral business. The soil training as important as its content is the first thing a florist should know in becoming one. The soil medium covers half of the day and the training continued with the training on basic floral arrangement, facilitated by Anne Maedia, a successful florist and a member of SIWIBA.

The floral training aimed at providing members to gain the basic knowledge and skills on floral arrangement and basic hints in floral art and understanding each floral tool. The basic arrangement was called the all-round arrangement and it has given a rewarding start off skills for the participants.

Most have expressed a deep interest on learning very beautiful art. Some have suggested extending training on such unique talents so that the learning could be worthwhile.

SIWIBA will continue to provide these training but on a consistent basis that would benefit all members on all levels of their needs.
