Third Mere's Market for 2014

On a remembered day on which tens of thousands of brave American women took to the streets of New York to advocate their right to vote, SIWIBA members took to the streets of Honiara yet again to demonstrate their abilities as capable businesswomen.

Following the hugely successful July-August Mere’s Market, the October 23rd event saw the largest number of SIWIBA participants - up to 91 members in total.

The increase was largely due to the positive feedback from the last Mere’s Market.

That success even led to an increase in the number of SIWIBA’s financial members; all hoping for an opportunity to take part in future markets.

Lining the stalls was a variety of products and food items.

Recycling themed handmade necklaces, earrings and bangles drew the most attention from curious shoppers and passers-by.

All the items were crafted from used paper, tin cans and nylon strings.

They were not the only attractions as ladies’ accessories woven from a collection of sea and coconut shells were also greatly admired.

But the highlight of the event was the crowning of the national beauty pageant’s Miss Charity, which was hosted by the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau and incorporated with the Mere’s Market activities.

The crowning wasn’t just enjoyable because of the glitter; the beautiful young women also had messages to share with the crowd, giving thoughtful speeches on how Solomon Islanders can develop the country both in infrastructure and through its human resources.

However, if one was to ask what made this Mere’s Market special, it would have been the fact that all who participated, from the vendors to the beauty pageants, were all unafraid to be taken out of their comfort zones, trying new things and sharing and exploring new ideas.
