Skills and Consultation for Informal Businesses

The Solomon Islands Women in Business Association organized a workshop for the informal businesses based on the theme Skills and consultation workshop for informal businesses. This is the first of its kind that SIWIBA organizes and it comprises of more than 130 participants in the informal sector.

SIWIBA members operate on two streams of businesses. The formal sector has 73 members operating in it and the informal sector which constitutes of the largest group in SIWIBA has 230 members. SIWIBA on its work plan and mission was to empower women economically as well as capacity development especially in the informal sector by delivering specific trainings and assisting in providing direction to take their business to the next level.

Likewise, the workshop is focusing on analyzing the specific needs of women. It was like a first step in building their businesses by identifying individual needs especially training needs. This step will help the women as well as the organization to deliver appropriate training needs according to the specific category they have choose as their focus businesses they will build from. There were four sessions that was carried out. Given that most of the women have two to three small other businesses, this will help them to focus on one goal first until they have registered to the mainstream. After they have chosen what business each would take, they were given questionnaires under each category of their choice. These set of questionnaires were drawn up in a way they could understand and answer straight from their business background. They were divided into groups under each category and discuss the questionnaires, training needs, challenges, achievements and their plan for the future of their business. These were being presented in front of everyone and followed by an open discussion by anyone who wants to share their ideas, experiences, and other business advices.

This workshop not only give direction to women but also to the organization as this will help SIWIBA to provide appropriate training needs to its members. SIWIBA will continue to give support and see to it that a number of women in the informal sector will eventually transit into formal businesses.

SIWIBA would continue to thank Pacific Leadership Program (PLP) for funding the workshop. SIWIBA also want to extend their appreciation to Commonwealth Youth Program Office to provide their seminar room for accommodating the large number of participants for the workshop.

SIWIBA will continue to commit in providing the best training for its members and support in their businesses.
